Last month, 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman killed 22 in Nova Scotia. This was the worst mass shooting in Canada's history. The shooter had a handgun (which are already nearly banned in Canada) and two long guns.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wasted no time in banning evil looking rifles in Canada within about two weeks. This ban was made completely by his cabinet without any legislative action. The article admits that "the Nova Scotia shooter didn't have a gun license and thus possessed all of his weapons illegally." In other words, this ban will do nothing to prevent future shootings like this except to 1. penalize law abiding gun owners and 2. ensure that the future victims in shootings like this will have no way to protect themselves. Guns were banned based on: 1. semiautomatic action with a large magazine capacity 2. modern design 3. wide availability in the Canadian market. "Modern design", "Large magazine capacity" -it is so ridiculous when politicians who know nothing about guns try to ban guns based on how they look. Later the article says that these guns are "not suitable for hunting or sporting activities." Of course, I disagree with this. Semiautomatic rifles are fantastic for hunting and sporting purposes. Most importantly though, the 2nd Amendment isn't about hunting or sporting activities. The 2nd Amendment is about protecting our freedom and our American way of life from tyrants.
