NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting
This is a good place place to start if you have very little or no handgun experience. The course starts with an 8 hour NRA online course that you complete at your own pace (it saves your place so you can complete it in as many sessions as you'd like). This course covers the basics of safety, types of handguns, operation and marksmanship. Once you're done with the online course, you come to my facility (in Powhatan) and we spend about 1.5 hours reviewing the material and some hands-on practice with unloaded guns. Then, we go out to the range and shoot a qualification target to put everything that you've learned together. You don't need to own a gun to take this course, you are welcome to use mine.
Completion of this course qualifies the student to apply for a Virginia concealed carry permit.

We'll finish the course by learning the basic concepts of using a handgun to protect yourself including general legal advice, mental preparation, where to aim and shoot and how to improve your skills. If you don't yet own a handgun, the shooting portion of this course can include trying several different guns to determine what features are important to you.

Church Security Team
I created this course in the aftermath of the Sutherland Springs, TX tragedy as a service to those churches who wish to empower their congregations to protect themselves. This course consists of an hour discussion of high profile church shootings and then two hours of training in the basics of self-defense with a handgun.
I will provide this course at the nominal cost below to members of church security teams that are fully endorsed by their church leadership.
