Gun Accident Causes

As a firearms instructor, I hate reading stories of accidental shootings like this one about a graduation gift that went wrong.  Brennan Fields received a gun as a high school graduation gift.  Then he shot and killed his girlfriend while he was showing it to her.  It is time for gun owners to start making safety our #1 priority!  A gun makes an excellent present but should not be given to someone who has not been taught to handle a it safely.  I've posted before about the rules for safe gun handling.  Clearly, Mr. Fields broke all of these.

Gun accidents are caused by:
  1. Ignorance. Ignorance is not knowing the correct way to handle a gun safely.  Many people have grown up around guns and shooting with their family but have never been taught how to safely handle a gun.  They've been lucky.  When an accident finally happens to these people, ignorance is the cause because they didn't really know better.
  2. Negligence.  Negligence is knowing the right way to handle a gun but not applying it.  Negligence is worse than ignorance because if an accident happens you'll have no one to blame but yourself.  I've been around many gun owners who know the right way to handle their guns but sometimes are a bit lax on the direction they point their gun or in keeping their finger off of the trigger.

I'm not sure which of these was to blame in the case of Mr. Fields, but the lesson is crystal clear.  If you've learned the rules of safe gun handling, ensure you apply them 100% of the time and that those around you do too!  If you don't know the rules of safe gun handling - learn them now!

Deadly Fight - What would you do?

I've written before about the need for concealed carry permit holders to think through potential situations they could encounter and which ones would require them to draw their gun and which ones would be better for them to avoid and let the police handle.

I was reminded of this principle recently when I saw an article about a private citizen who stopped a potentially deadly fight in a Wal-Mart parking lot without firing a shot.  I'm very glad the situation turned out well for the concealed carrier here but it could have easily gone wrong.

The permit holder saw a fight between two men, one armed with a baseball bat and one with a knife.  He then drew his gun and told the men to stop fighting.  I would not recommend that you handle a situation like this similarly.  Here are some of the questions that came to my mind:

1. How do you know who is the "good guy" in a scenario like this?
2.  What happens if the fighters don't stop?  Was the concealed carrier ready to shoot the men if they didn't listen to his commands?  If he shoots the fighters, he will likely be in legal trouble for escalating the situation.
3.  What would he do if they start attacking him?  Again, the situation goes from bad to worse.

Clearly, this is a potentially deadly situation and I would not have blamed the man for ensuring his handgun was easily accessible to protect HIMSELF.  When I think through this situation, I would try to get a safe distance away from the fight (maybe in my car) and call the police.

Is it time to ban cars?

I'm shocked and saddened to read about last night's terrorist attack in London where cowards used a car to mow down innocent pedestrians before continuing their rampage with knives.  Similar car attacks happened in Times Square last month and in Paris a year ago.

As we've seen over and over again, a gun isn't the only tool used to commit mass murder, yet no one is talking about banning cars or tractors.  Mass murders cannot be stopped by outlawing guns.

It has been proven over and over again that guns save lives.  Reducing private gun ownership or restricting the ability of law abiding citizens to carry guns will only serve to make us all more vulnerable to madmen who seek to cause mass casualties.
